Its a BOY!

and Allie is okay with it!!

Today, Dustin, Allie and Mark accompanied me to the baby doctor. It was a very special day, because we got to "see" the baby and find out if we're having a brother or a sister. Mark was sure that since we were at the doctor someone was sick and someone would be getting a shot. But neither turned out to be true, so he was good!

Ever since the day we told the kids I was pregnant, Allie has said that she needed wanted a little sister. So, Dustin and I have been coaching her and telling her that the baby could be and most likely would be a brother. Then when we went to my sister, Ashley's ultrasound and Allie literally broke down in tears when Ashley's doctor announced that she was having a boy, I knew I did not want her to be upset like that if we had a boy.

So every now and then we'd talk to her about it and say that it was up to Jesus if we have a brother or a sister and that we should be happy either way. And that we will still love the baby even if it is a brother. A few nights ago we were talking about today's doctor visit and she said all on her own, "I'm so excited to see the baby and it will be okay if it is a brother."

And so it is....

The ultrasound tech checked the baby's brain and heart first. Good and good! Then she asked if we wanted to know the baby's gender. "Um, YES please!" She she slid the remote-thingy down and found his legs. And BAM - HELLO! I said, "Ooop, its a boy!" She laughed and said she hadn't even seen it yet, and then she confirmed that yup it was true. We are having a boy!! (see above!)

Everything else looked normal and healthy. He's the right weight and length. There was only one thing --- she couldn't see his stomach clearly enough. She wasn't nervous but decided to do a follow up appointment in a month to be sure. Hopefully his stomach is fine and there!! We'll see again in a month.

We are all so happy and excited to have another little boy! Even Allie!!!

Mockingjay Randomness

I finished Mockingjay Wednesday and I've been pondering and rereading ever since.

I really loved the book. It was very intense and fast paced. I had to take a couple breaks to slow my heart beat. Hey, I didn't want to go into preterm labor people. But I wasn't so sure I loved it at first. There were some awesome one liners and some sweet bow and arrow action.. but a couple of things (Peeta and Gale) just killed me. When I finished I thought "Hmmm, okay... What?!"

Let's talk about Gale, shall we? What the flippin' heck happened?!
The boy next door.. oh I have soft spot for you. But I hated every minute of Gale in this book. It seems like everyone of his scenes was building me up for a let down. And boy oh boy were we let down. The Nut. Not telling Katniss about Peeta's interview. Questioning why Katniss saved her stylists. Being partner's with Coin. LASTLY! How could he have just left Katniss in 12 without so much as a "good bye, we'll be friends forever.. but I'll let you live your life now."??? NO-- we get "Was it your bomb?" "I dunno? Does it matter? You'll always be thinking about it." ACCCKKKK! That's all you got boy?! Soooo mad. Oh Gale. You let me down.

That brings me to Finnick, a friend Katniss could actually depend on. I loved Finnick. I had to reread the page he died on multiple times to make sure it really happened. I loved Finnick's love for Annie. I loved the one on one moments he had with Katniss.. the night in the hallway when Katniss realizes what Snow is doing to Peeta and Finnick knows.. he's there too. Then his interview.. dang. All that big hot-stuff act was always just a front. A front for the pain he was going through. "Finnick. Maybe some pants?" "Why? Do you find this" -he strikes a ridiculously provocative pose- "distracting?" Oh, I laughed til I cried.

Talking about pain brings me to Haymitch. I wanted to rip his face off again for Katniss when he made his entrance in Mockingjay.. out of nowhere, just a voice overhead in the studio. But time after time Haymitch proves to know exactly what Katniss needs and what will best help her while benefiting the rebellion.

Coin. Oh man. I knew she was a bad egg. When Katniss said yes to the reinstatement of the Hunger Games, I knew something was up. Then BAM arrow through the heart. YES! Justice.

Johanna. Love. Hate. Love. "She got very squeaky. It was like someone stabbing a mouse with a fork repeatedly." Nice.

Now, we must talk about Peeta. I love Peeta. I truly do love him. He played a strong role throughout the series. At first I thought he was really screwed over in Mockingjay. I missed him. He was gone.. he was absent.. then he was back but it wasn't him. He was different. It scared me. I didn't want any one to kill him. I didn't want him to be different. But by being different and by falling in love with Katniss again I fell in love with him too. How he replayed lines from previous conversations. Giving Katniss the lamb stew. "You’re a painter. You’re a baker. You like to sleep with the windows open. You never take sugar in your tea. And you always double-knot your shoelaces." Ah! Tears. Then when Katniss kissed him in the tunnel, I knew she had made her choice. "Stay with me." "Always." Perfect. Lastly, the ending paragraph

"On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in spring. The bright yellow rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go one, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that"

"So after, when he whispers 'You love me. Real or not real?' I tell him, 'Real.'"

Jessica you might kick me for this.. but I'm happy that Katniss and Peeta had their happily ever after. I'm happy that they had their babies and the book ended the way it did. I'm happy.

Finally, Katniss. Katniss grew and grew throughout the series. I can't believe she started the games at fifteen and the war was waged during her seventeenth year. What amazing strength. What bravery. She didn't always know what she was doing.. she didn't always know what to do. But she made it work. She rocked it. She never became a pawn for the rebels. Haymitch said in Mockingjay "Every time we coach her or give her lines, the best we can hope for is okay. It has to come from her. That's what people are responding to." It was all her. Katniss the Mockingjay. You go girl!

Okay I'm still not done...
The symbolism -- the pearl, the rose, the bow and arrow.. district 13 - being underground, the bomb, Prim, Buttercup!

This book drive to the core of your morals. What do you believe? How far would you go?
Plutarch said, "We're fickle, stupid beings with poor memories and a great gift for self-destruction. Although who knows? Maybe this will be it.." I don't believe that. I don't believe that at all. When Katniss writes the book about her experiences, I know that things will not repeat themselves. When she plays the game listing in her head every act of goodness she sees. We know. Good always triumphs over evil. This is a happy ending.

Deep in the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes
And when again they open, the sun will rise.

Here it is safe, here it is warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.

An Heirloom

Define: heirloom -- A personal possession that usually has a sentimental value which exceeds its monetary value.

A couple years ago my Grandpa bought my Grandma a new Bernina for Christmas. Her old one (below) sat in her spare closet collecting dust for a while.. enter me.

"Hey Grandma, can I borrow your sewing machine.. for like.. ever?"

Not only did she let me have her old sewing machine but she just recently gave me her sewing desk too! We just had to drag it out of her basement. Which I of course, made Dustin do!

Now I have a four nice sized draws for fabric, for thread, for treats I want to hide from my kids, for anything!

And how heavenly is it to have a flat surface to sew? I'm in love!

While we were cleaning out the sewing desk Allie found a kiss...

and I found some thread that was spun on wooden spools! There were quite a few in one of the drawers. I plan on displaying them in an old Kerr jar.

I also found some buried treasure!
Look at all those feet. Zipper foot, button foot.. you name it!
Squuuuueeee!

 Mark found a paper..
He says, "Wat dis?"

Dis paper happened to be the Certificate of Guarantee that came with Grandma's sewing machine. Looks like she got it for Christmas in 1973 and darn.. I just missed that 30 year warranty...

 I think I'll have to replace the "boxing man" who currently resides on my wall with the certificate in a frame and the wooden spools on a cute shelf.

And this was my first project done using my new table! A rag quilt made for my cousin's cousin. It was lots of fun. I can't wait to sew some more.. now I just need to find some time!

17 Weeks

Just this last Monday I had an appointment with the "baby doctor." Everything went really well. I made another solo trip to Vegas! Woot woot. Go Me! I'm a big girl now. Baby is healthy and growing normally. The doc said the ultrasound from my last appointment was "beautiful." And hey, I'm healthy too. Score.

They sent me home with a little goody bag full of magazines, brochures, formula, a little shirt for the newest Nelson and a pregnancy planner. When I got home I was going through everything, mostly throwing away the brochures.. I don't plan on cord blood banking.. and Allie was "helping" me. When she came across the pregnancy planner she asked if she could have it. It looked like a normal day planner to me, and I know Allie loves to pretend play with any kind of paper.. so I said sure. Well little did I know.. there were fetal development pictures inside! GASP!

A few minutes after I gave her the planner she came up to me and said, "Mommy is this really what our baby looks like?" So I flipped to the page with the 14-18 week picture and showed her what the baby looks like inside my tummy.

"Mommy why is the baby in a bubble?"
"Um, because that is how the baby lives inside my tummy."
"Oh. Kinda like Sandy on Sponge Bob?"
"Yes honey, just like Sandy on Sponge Bob! (Laughing)"

Our baby

Allie has been super inquisitive this pregnancy. She was really too young to "get" what was happening when I was pregnant with Mark and Estefan takes the boy approach of don't ask, don't tell. So this has kinda taken me all by surprise. I figured these questions would come... but I don't know what to tell her?! The truth of course.. but without details.

"How did the baby get in there?"
"When will it come out?"
"How does it get out?"

Ahhhhh........ (crickets chirpping)

Right now I'm going with the Dennis the Menace explanation.

Dennis: The most important thing is they marry the women, then the women can go down and get the baby.
Margaret: The baby is in her stomach.
Dennis: She has to get it installed. Her stomach isn't just filled up with babies.
Margaret: Who installed some?
Dennis: A minister and a doctor.
Margaret: How?
Dennis: 'How'?
Joey: [
laughs] She wants to know how?
Margaret: Tell me, Dennis. How?
Dennis: The bellybutton-it opens up.
Margaret: How come men have them?
Dennis: So they don't look weird in bathing suits.

I like this scene too.. tee hee..

Margaret: You know why men are so lousey when it comes to taking care of babies?
Dennis: They have better things to do.
Margaret: Like what? Play golf and drink beer?
Dennis: No, like hunting, having wars, driving cars, shaving, cleaning fish. Do you know how to do that?
Joey: Me?
Dennis: Margaret.
Joey: Oh, okay.
Margaret: If you didn't have women, you wouldn't have babies, which means you wouldn't have people.
Joey: And if you didn't have men, who'd drive the ladies to the hospital?

P.S. I have my second ultrasound on the 30th. So we'll know if the baby is a boy or a girl in less than two weeks!! (Insert heel click here) YAY!

Reindeer, Dinosaurs and Pigs

Mother's of little boys know that bumps and bruises and cuts and scrapes show up every now and then...
but you'd think I'd remember how he got this one.
It may have been when he just started crying randomly at Lin's..
but it could've been when Allie pulled him of her bed and he hit the floor..
I don't know?
But I do know he's the cutest little red nosed reindeer ever!
I'm kinda sad its scabbing over.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday, the boys went to RC Farms to drop off a load of hay.
Mark came home with this fuzzy little piggy bank. Thanks Janet!
So I quizzed him up about his trip and the little pig.
Me: Did you have lots of fun seeing the pigs?
Mark: Wotsatimes. Pet dem.
Me: What else did you do?
Mark: Trow hay at dem. No cows der. No big dinosaurs eeder.
Me: Oh bummer. No dinosaurs at the pig farm?
Mark: No. (Big smile) But dis pig haves money init!
Freaky Friday
Yesterday was kinda of a bummer of a day... I'm going to blame it all on the fact that it was Friday the 13th.
Luckily, I have some pretty funny kids and when they aren't driving me crazy, they are making me laugh.
Estefan: Reading is hard. Its boring and hard. The older I get, the less pictures there are in the books!
 Allie: I am a princess, I don't have to work.
Me: Well then how will you get money.
Allie: From the taxes of course.
Me: ....
Mark: When daddy be home?
Me: At dinner time.
Mark: Dinner, yucky. Me hate dat. Daddy no come home.
(note to self: Mark doesn't like sweet and sour chicken.)
24th of July
We had a fabulous weekend in Cannonville for the 24th. We didn't go to any parades or watch the fire works or any such Pioneer Day happening. But we did spend every bit of it relaxing and playing together as a family.
Pine Lake
We didn't actually play by or in the lake, we drove off on some side road until we got to this stream. The kids played and Dustin and I sat in the shade and watched.
Bryce Canyon
Later that day it got really over cast and rained a little.
Tourists must be scared of rain because there weren't many people at Fairyland.
Posey Lake
The next day we decided to do a road trip or sorts, so we ventured to Posey Lake. I'm so glad we did. It was probably my favorite stop all weekend (besides Grandma's for dinner!)
Oh! The following photos need further detail.
While we were sitting around Dustin started carving on a stick. Allie was intrigued and asked if he was making her a wand. So he gave it to her and made Estefan a "wand" as well.
Well two wizards with wands must duel!
Expelliarmus! I think Allie won. ;)
Hell's Backbone
The Backbone
Dustin and I remember it being way scarier... someone must've done some serious road work.
Nelson Farm
We had a great time. Dustin and I are officially becoming snow-birds the minute he retires... if not sooner!
